CHERRY PIE ROAD RACE

          Sunday, March 22nd, 2015 – Independence, OR.  

 

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Race stages at City Hall in Independence, OR.  “Neutral” spare wheels are used for this event. Wheels you bring may be issued to other riders in the event of puncture during the race.  Return ALL spare wheels issued to you to the Wheel Pit!!

PARKING:

Parking available at Riverview Park in downtown Independence and along “C” Street into the Park.  Follow signs and directions by Event Volunteers.  DO NOT park on Main Street in the downtown area, in private driveways or businesses if the businesses are open.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

See Course Maps and Profile on-line.  Neutral Roll-out from City Hall to the Independence Bridge (River Rd.).  Fields will do one (31 mi), two (60 mi) or three laps (88 mi). Course follows smooth pavement, rolling hills, a few thigh-burnin’ climbs and rewarding descents around scenic farmlands between Independence and Albany.  With a fantastic, flat sprint finish in front of City Hall, come test out your early season legs!!

COURSE MAP:

FEED ZONE (CAT 1/2 Mens Race):  Due to the length of the race for this field, we will be adding a feed zone for the Cat 1/2 race.   We are still determining where this zone will be setup, so please stay tuned for more information.  All teams are responsible for manning the feed zone during this race for your team.   
 
VOLUNTEERS:  If you are interesting in volunteering for the Cherry Pie this year, we are looking for course flaggers and course drivers.   WVCT will cover your race entry and provide lunch – in exchange for you help during this event!  AM and PM session help is needed.   Please contact me @ 541-905-9698 for more information.

  • Prizes shown will be split 3 deep in each Field, unless noted otherwise.
  • Prizes awarded as cash or gift certificates, at the discretion of the Promoter.
  • Prizes for Morning Session presented during Afternoon Session, as soon as Results can be tabulated.
  • Afternoon Session prizes presented after the end of the last race as soon as Results can be tabulated.

 

FACILITIES:

Portable toilets will be available at Riverview Park and at the Start Line area.  Water will be available in Coolers & Jugs at the Information Area and at the Start Line area.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:

  • Use your OBRA Race Numbers for this event.  Pin two numbers on jersey – one on right side and one horizontally across your lower back.  If Officials cannot read your number, you will not be scored.  OBRA licenses are required to race.  Licenses available for purchase at Registration Area.  No license = No race.  Racers are STRONGLY encouraged to get licenses from OBRA as early as possible.
  • Riders off-the-back and Returning to the Start Area must follow Oregon all applicable traffic laws, signs and traffic control devices.  Ride single file and check for traffic regularly.
  • Centerline Rule is strongly enforced for your safety!  Officials will relegate or DQ centerline violators at their discretion.  Consider this is your First and Final Warning.  Helmets required anytime riders are on their bike.
  • Littering and public urination will not be tolerated!  Violators subject to fines and/or prosecution.
  • No feed zones.  Feeding from vehicles or spectators is not allowed anytime.
  • OBRA and the Race Promoters do not provide insurance coverage for injuries that occur at the race. Costs related to any injuries are the responsibility of the individual participant.
  • Participation in the Cherry Pie Road Race is voluntary.  Race Promoters are not responsible for personal injury, loss or damage of equipment, or theft directly or indirectly related to your voluntary participation in this event.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM:

  • Monmouth (Hwy 99W):  Drive east on OR 51 (Monmouth St.) for 2.5 miles.  In Independence, turn left (north) on Main St.  Take the first right onto C St. into Riverview Park.
  • Corvallis (Hwy 99W):  From downtown Corvallis (99W & Hwy 20), head north on 99W for 20 miles. In Monmouth, turn right (east) on OR 51 (Monmouth St).  Follow for 2.5 miles to Main St.
  • Portland (I-5 southbound):  South on I-5 to Keizer.  Take Exit 260B (Chemawa Rd.).  Follow signs to Hwy 99E (Salem Parkway).  Follow 99E for 5.2 miles to downtown Salem and Hwy 22 (Marion St.).  Turn right and head east toward Dallas/Ocean Beaches.  In 5.4 miles, turn left (south) onto OR 51 (Independence Hwy).  Follow 6.3 miles to Riverview Park (left on “C” St. into Riverview Park).
  • Eugene (I-5 northbound):  North on I-5 to Exit 243 (Ankeny Hill Rd).  Turn left (west) on Ankeny Hill Rd. and follow 2.6 mi. to Buena Vista Rd.  Turn left onto Buena Vista, follow 1 mi. to Sidney Rd.  Turn right onto Sidney Rd. (becomes Riverside Rd.), follow 7.6 mi. to River Rd. (west).  Turn right (west) onto River Rd., cross Independence Bridge.  At Stop (Main St.), turn right, follow 1/2 mile north to Riverview Park.

Paceline and Race Riding Skills Clinic – this Sunday, 2/15!

This is a FREE CLINIC for all ladies interested in working on race riding skills, practice being in a paceline, and get comfortable riding close to other cyclists! This clinic is good for new riders interested in racing and for experienced riders who want to shake the cobwebs off their skills.
We’ll meet at 9am at Portland Design Works (15 NE Hancock & Williams), get into small groups, and ride out Williams and across the I-5 Bridge to Vancouver. We’ll practice skills on the road toward Vancouver Lake and Frenchman’s Bar, a nice flat route with low car traffic.

Plan for a flat 2-3hr ride, and dress to stay warm and dry. Bring your bike, a helmet, a flat kit and a smile!

All ladies are welcome! Bring friends!

The following are the results of the 2015 OBRA Annual Meeting that was held on February 7, 2015.

Congratulations to John Wilson and Meg Mautner who have been elected to another term on the OBRA Board of Directors.

Rules Passed

Public urination and/or defecation:

Riders who are caught urinating and/or defecating in public will be subject to penalties up to and including suspension. In general, the chief referee shall take into account the following when imposing a penalty or making a recommendation for a suspension.

1. availability of toilet facilities

2. type of event

3. type of venue

4. presence of the public and/or minors

5. sophistication of the rider

6. location of behavior

7. any extenuating circumstances (medical condition etc)

8. previous violations

In any recommendation for suspension, the Chief Referee shall document the above criteria and submit to the Executive Director. The Executive Director shall consider the above criteria in determining the appropriateness and duration of a suspension.

Any rider punished for public urination and/or defecation must send a note of apology to the venue owner if appropriate and to the promoter of the event.

If the behavior results in a direct loss of a venue e.g. the urination/defecation is cited in a letter denying use of a venue, the Board of Directors may impose any punishment up to a permanent suspension from the organization.

An organizer may use “special rules” for their event as long as they are approved, in advance by the Chief Referee and the OBRA Executive Director. Special rules will be clearly communicated to the riders prior to the start of the event, preferably in written form.

Modifies rule 2.14 Omnium

An omnium is a set of races in which riders compete for points in each event and final placings are determined by total points in all events. Different numbers of points may be given in different events. The scoring scheme shall be specified in writing prior to the start of the first race. Generally the points awarded in each event shall be 7-5-3-2-1 for first through fifth places.

Modifies rule 7.3.4 Wheel restrictions

Fully enclosed or disc front wheels or spoke covers on front wheels are not allowed in mass start events.

Non-handheld radios with only one earpiece providing communications with coaches, managers or other riders may be used only in road races that include Category 1 or 2 riders and do not include Cat 4 or 5 riders. Audio playback devices are specifically prohibited.

Unless instructed by the Chief Referee, all riders must stay to the right of the centerline, or another point on the road designated by the Chief Referee.

The Chief Referee may remove lapped riders from the race. If lapped riders are allowed to finish, they will finish on the same lap as the leader. In case of a mishap, the rider(s) will report to a pit with his bicycle. Riders may not ride backward on the course to get to a pit, but may cut through the course to reach a pit. A rider may proceed backwards to the pit carrying his bicycle.

If you are renewing and indicated you had your card, you likely received just a renewal sticker- just peel and stick it on top of your old one. Bring proof of membership to all your races. If you do not, you will be charged a non-refundable fee.

Results are generally available on our website within 24-48 hours after a race on our website. If your team is an official OBRA team and your team name does not appear next to your results, please send an e-mail to kenji@obra.org. If you have questions about our team listing policy on results, please also send us an e-mail.

If you wish to upgrade on the track or on the road, you must send a request to upgrades@obra.org with a race resume. Upgrades to 1 in cyclocross and upgrades to Elite in mountain bike must be requested.  Upgrades are not automatic and must be requested even though you may have met the requirements. Otherwise, you may be disqualified at your next event if you race out of your assigned category.  Upgrade rules can be found at

Let’s Race Bikes Kickoff Ride

It’s time to kick off the new year and the 2015 road racing season with a social group ride! LRB will meet at 9am at Portland Bicycle Studio for coffee, socializing and to talk about the ride plans. The group will roll at 9:30am on a no-drop ride to work on group riding skills.

Plan for a 2-3hr ride, and dress to stay warm and dry. Bring your bike, a helmet, a flat kit and a smile!

Meg Mautner (incumbent)

Meg Mautner is a teacher in the Beaverton School district. She currently teaches middle school math and algebra. Meg started racing bikes in the mid 1990’s and found a sport she is passionate about. While track cycling is her favorite discipline, Meg has raced road, crits, time trials, cyclocross, and even a few short track races. In addition to racing, Meg is the lead instructor for the Alpenrose Track Development classes. She has served on OBRA’s board of directors for the past 9 years.

John Wilson (incumbent)

John Wilson is a R&D Engineering Manager at Hewlett Packard, and has been a Board member of OBRA since 2011. John has been a racing enthusiast most of his life including 10 years motorcycle racing and 15 years of bicycle racing. He carries his passion for cycling, along with his organizational and management skills into Junior Development. In 2009 John created the OBRA Junior Cyclocross Series that has helped lift Oregon up to the highest junior participation levels in the country. John followed up with the creation of a High School Cyclocross League helping to introduce cycling beyond racing families to the general public. John continues to provide administrative leadership to both the Junior and High School CX series, and is working with OBRA to extend the model into other disciplines. 2015 marks John’s 6th year coaching a Junior Cycling team. He was a co-founder and vice president of the Willamette Valley Cycling team. John graduated with a degree in Physics from University of California Davis, and completed graduate work at the University of California, San Diego.

Representatives from teams that paid in 2014-2015 are eligible to vote.

Food catered by Chris DiMinno of Chris King.  Awards party is open to all but we request that you RSVP so we can anticipate the proper amount of food.  Beer provided by Ninkasi Brewing Company of Eugene.  Thank you!

2015 OBRA Criterium and Cyclocross Championships

The 2015 OBRA Criterium and Cyclocross Championships have been selected.  Congratulations to Charlie Warner and the selection of the Vancouver Criterium as the criterium championships.  Congratulations to Carol Cohen and the city of Sandy and the selection of the Sandy Corn Cross race as the 2015 OBRA Cyclocross Championships.
